Thanks to the generous support of the Kiwanis Club of Carefree, children and youth in foster care are discovering new opportunities to learn, grow, and enjoy being kids.
Every child deserves the chance to make memories with friends, explore new interests, and receive the support they need to succeed in school. For children and youth in foster care, these experiences can be especially meaningful, providing opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills, and experience the joys of childhood.
Through its generous support of Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation’s (AFFCF) 2026 Childhood Activities program, the Kiwanis Club of Carefree is helping make these opportunities possible for children in foster care living in Carefree.
AFFCF’s Childhood Activities program is a flagship initiative that funds extracurricular activities and enriching experiences for children and youth in foster care, helping them participate in opportunities just like their peers. The program annually reaches approximately 45 youth in Carefree and more than 3,300 children and young adults throughout Arizona.
With the Kiwanis Club of Carefree’s continued support, local children can access experiences that encourage exploration, strengthen academic skills, and create lasting memories.
Making Room for Fun, Learning, and New Experiences
For children in foster care, childhood experiences can mean so much more than a day of fun. Whether it’s visiting a theme park, attending summer camp, or joining classmates on a school field trip, these opportunities help children discover their interests, build friendships, and feel included.
Theme park admissions and camp are among the most frequently requested activities through AFFCF’s Childhood Activities program. The Kiwanis Club of Carefree’s support helps fulfill these requests, giving children the opportunity to experience the excitement of trying something new.
For one child, that opportunity meant access to an annual pass to Hurricane Harbor. The request highlighted the importance of having a safe, structured place to enjoy recreation throughout the year.
“This opportunity would provide consistent access to safe, structured recreational activities that support both emotional well-being and healthy development, ” the child’s caregiver shared in the funding application.
An annual pass creates opportunities for more than a single outing. It gives a child something to look forward to, opportunities to enjoy time with others, and the freedom to experience the fun and excitement of childhood.
The Kiwanis Club of Carefree is helping make these moments possible, ensuring that children have opportunities to play, explore, and create memories beyond their everyday routines.
Supporting Classroom Success and a Brighter Future
Enrichment also happens outside the classroom. For children navigating academic challenges, access to tutoring can make a meaningful difference in their ability to keep up with coursework, build confidence, and work toward graduation.
Through the Childhood Activities program, AFFCF helps connect children with the academic support they need to move forward.
One high school student was struggling with an online earth and space science course. The material had become challenging, and additional support was needed to help the student better understand the subject and stay on track academically.
The funding request explained that tutoring would help the student “increase her knowledge and understanding of the subject material so she can stay on track with her class and maintain a passing grade.” The student could also benefit from support with executive functioning skills, which can help with organization, time management, and completing assignments.
Another student’s request underscored just how important timely academic support can be. The high school student was failing three classes and needed tutoring to improve grades and remain on track for graduation.
With support for tutoring, these students have an opportunity to strengthen their skills, work through difficult material, and build a stronger foundation for future success.
Academic support is about more than improving a report card. It’s about helping young people recognize their potential, develop tools they can use throughout their education, and feel empowered to pursue their goals.
Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Carefree, more children can access the resources they need to overcome challenges and keep moving forward.
Turning a School Field Trip Into a Moment of Discovery
Sometimes, a single experience can spark a new interest or make learning come alive in an unexpected way.
One child wanted to participate in a class field trip to Great Skate, where students would explore the science and mathematics behind roller skating. The experience included STEM lessons covering motion, skate design, mathematics, and sound.
The child’s funding request explained that the class would be learning about “the science of roller skating, motion and skate design, math and roller skating, and super sounds of the rink.”
The child wanted to be part of the experience, learning alongside classmates while discovering how science connects to an everyday activity.
Thanks to support for Childhood Activities, opportunities like these can become accessible to children in foster care, allowing them to participate in meaningful school experiences with their peers.
Field trips offer more than a change of scenery. They encourage curiosity, introduce new concepts, and help children connect classroom learning to the world around them. Just as importantly, they allow children to share experiences with classmates and feel included in the moments that make school memorable.
The Kiwanis Club of Carefree’s generosity helps ensure that a child’s ability to participate in these experiences isn’t limited by circumstances beyond their control.
A Community That Shows Up for Children
From theme park admissions and summer camp to tutoring and educational field trips, the Kiwanis Club of Carefree is helping children in foster care access opportunities that support their well-being, education, and personal growth.
These experiences may look different from child to child, but each represents something important: a chance to explore an interest, overcome a challenge, build confidence, or simply enjoy being a kid.
Through AFFCF’s Childhood Activities program, support from community partners like the Kiwanis Club of Carefree helps turn these opportunities into reality for children who deserve the same chances to learn, grow, and thrive as their peers.
Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Carefree for your continued commitment to AFFCF and the children and youth you have helped serve in Carefree. Your generosity is creating moments of joy today while helping young people build confidence, discover their potential, and look forward to what’s possible tomorrow.
Together, we’re making childhood brighter, one opportunity at a time.
