Scholar Spotlight: Sid

At Phoenix College, one dedicated student is rewriting the script of their life, both literally and figuratively. A theatre major and first-generation college student, Sid is not only pursuing higher education but doing so with a deep sense of purpose shaped by their experience in foster care.

Looking Back

Now in their final semester, they reflect on a journey marked by resilience, change, and discovery.

“I always wanted to go to college,” they say, noting how being in foster care didn’t hold them back; it opened doors. Thanks to the support of the Department of Child Safety (DCS) and Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF), the financial pathway to college became clear.

“It opened opportunities that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.”

Discovering a Path

While Sid didn’t always know what they wanted to do, everything began to take shape in ninth grade. Originally interested in automotives, the pace didn’t feel right. A shift to theater revealed a newfound passion, not for the spotlight, but for the behind-the-scenes magic that brings a performance to life.

“I like working on stage props and direction more than acting,” Sid explains. Since then, they’ve contributed to about ten productions, two in high school and eight during college, gaining valuable experience and confidence with each show.

Balancing Act

Balancing school with the everyday challenges of adulthood hasn’t been easy.

“College has been tough, not just the classwork, but also facing the trials of being an adult,” they admit. “Being in foster care can be overwhelming. But it matters to me to get an education and make something of myself and not fall into the same path as my family members.”

One steady source of support has been the AFFCF Scholarship. Introduced by their first DCS caseworker, the scholarship has offered more than just financial help.

“It means a lot,” Sid says. “It gives me a sense of community. We’ve all had hardships, but we still made it here and chose to pursue higher education.”

The connections formed through AFFCF have provided emotional support as well. “It helps being around people who’ve had similar experiences. A lot of my friends talk about their families, and I don’t have that same experience.”

A Message to Others

Sid’s message to other foster youth who may be unsure about college is powerful and honest:

“Don’t doubt yourself. I don’t know everyone’s story, but if you made it through the foster care system, you have the right to say you’re capable. You don’t know what’s to come, but you owe it to yourself to try. Take advantage of the opportunity and get the experience.”

As they prepare for graduation this fall and continue exploring what comes next, Sid is already a shining example of what’s possible when courage, community, and opportunity meet.
