McKenna is a freshman nursing major attending NAU this fall. She is also one of 68 students in the AFFCF scholarship program. She talks about attending college and her goals for her future:

My current goal right now is to be a pediatric nurse. I love children and helping them would be the best thing for me. Right now, nursing right now is my main focus for a career and I want to earn a bachelor’s degree. I know that it can be pretty competitive, but I am going to give it my best shot.

Another goal I have for myself is being stable in life. These past few years have been good. Before I was in foster care, my life was upside down and full of uncertainty. I don’t want to have to worry about the things I did as a child. Instead, I want to focus on my career and my family, when I have one. My dream is to be a pediatric nurse in a big, well-known hospital. I like to be on my feet and a career in nursing will give me that. Equally important to having stability in my life, I will be happy.

So Far, So Good

So far, classes have been good so far. I began as a freshman at NAU, although BIO 181 has been one of my more challenging classes. I expected this going in, so I can’t really complain about it. Besides that, I have all A’s in my other classes. I enjoy psychology, which is an interesting subject to learn.

Adjusting to my freshman year has been different, thanks to COVID-19. I haven’t been physically in school since March, so it has been quite a journey. I know that everything has its ups and downs and this is just part of it. I am quite happy with how school is going and I cannot wait until next semester with new classes, and hopefully less COVID.
