The journey to higher education is rarely a straight path, and for students who have experienced foster care, the road is often filled with additional challenges. Kaya, an Arizona State University (ASU) Online student, set to graduate in Spring 2026 with a degree in Communication, has overcome significant obstacles to pursue her dream of making a difference.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
College was always part of the plan, but the reality of being in foster care made it seem unattainable. “I gave up on the idea of college because I didn’t think the funding would be there, and I didn’t feel like I had hope for the future or the support to make sure I could do it and stay motivated,” said Kaya. However, through resilience and support from organizations like Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF), Kaya found the means to continue her education.
Overcoming Challenges
One of the most significant hurdles came in high school when a severe car accident forced her to drop out and pursue a GED instead of a traditional diploma. “I was top of my class, and I had to drop out. It felt like all my hard work was for nothing,” Kaya commented. However, AFFCF provided funding for the GED tests, marking the beginning of a crucial support system that would continue throughout her educational journey.
Finding a Purpose
Choosing a career path was another journey in itself. Initially uncertain, Kaya ultimately landed on Communication as her field of study. “Communication is the basis of every relationship, so I wanted to learn as much as I can about it and go from there.” Her goal is to work for a nonprofit or an organization where she can make a difference in the lives of others.
The Role of AFFCF
The AFFCF scholarship has played a pivotal role beyond financial assistance.
“Being an AFFCF scholar has truly been one of the most meaningful experiences I have had the honor to be a part of. It has opened so many doors for me, and I truly feel like I have a support system within AFFCF,” she noted. In addition to financial aid, AFFCF has provided emotional and academic support, reinforcing Kaya’s belief that she is not alone in her journey.
Looking Ahead
As graduation approaches, Kaya’s future is bright. Working on her degree in Communication with the unwavering support of AFFCF, she is on a path to creating meaningful change. Her story serves as an inspiration to other foster youth, showing that with resilience, support, and a willingness to seek help, higher education is within reach.
