At just 17 years old, Rachel is already paving the way for an inspiring future. Despite facing significant challenges in her personal life, Rachel has shown incredible determination and resilience in pursuit of her career goals. Since joining AFFCF’s Keys to Success (KTS) program, her journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
Career Goals
Rachel has a passion for working with children and has set her sights on becoming a Child Life Specialist. Currently working toward her GED, she is set to take her exams soon, with plans to continue her education at Arizona State University’s University Learning (ASU UL) program. She’ll be able to earn college credit while taking a more flexible approach—attending part-time rather than full-time. Rachel has expressed an interest in taking a gap year to work, which aligns with her goal of gaining experience and independence as she prepares for her future.
Though she’s eager to jump ahead, Rachel is taking things step by step, with encouragement from her team. The next milestone in her career exploration is an interview with a Child Life Specialist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, a valuable opportunity to learn more about her desired career path.
Steps Toward Independence
Rachel, who will turn 18 in March, is making significant strides toward independence. In addition to working toward her GED, she holds a valid driver’s license, has opened a checking account, and has set a goal to move out of her current placement by July 2025. Her dedication to building a future for herself is evident in the many steps she’s already taken to prepare for adulthood.
The First Job
Rachel’s hard work recently paid off when she interviewed for a receptionist position at a local assisted living facility. Thanks to a partnership between KTS and the employer, Rachel was hired on the spot and is now working 20 hours per week at $16 an hour. This steady income has further fueled her motivation to succeed.
To ensure Rachel’s success in the workplace, her KTS team helped her prepare with a shopping trip to pick out professional clothing for her new role. She was thrilled with the opportunity to shop for business attire and is grateful for the resources that make such a difference in her journey.
Financial Literacy
Rachel has also completed the Keys to Financial Success financial literacy course, an essential step as she will remain in DCS care until she turns 21. This course has equipped her with the knowledge to manage her finances as she transitions into adulthood.
A Promising Future Ahead
Rachel’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, young people can overcome obstacles and reach their full potential. With KTS by her side, Rachel is well on her way to becoming the Child Life Specialist she dreams of being and we couldn’t be more proud of her progress.
